My grandmother was born in Geddinton Nov. 4, 1888. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Magdalene. I have the prayer book she was given at her Confirmation. Her name was Agnes Mary Hopkins, the daughter of York and Rebecca Hopkins. She emigrated to Canada with her sister, Emily Whitney in 1910. My father visited Geddington when he... [more]

Northamptonshire memories
I have put 1970 as my year of recollection, but I was catching the 259 service from bay 5 at about the time this photograph was taken.
In 1970 I was working on the buses as a conductor and by 1974 as a driver.
You will see in the photo that buses reversed onto the bays, this changed in the mid... [more]

Working in Kettering Careers Office
I spent an enjoyable month in Spring 1988 working for Kettering Careers Office as part of my training during a post grad year for my Careers Guidance Diploma.
I remember Tresham College, lovely shops, friendly people, a comfortable bed and breakfast for the month arranged for me by the college, and my journey each Sunday and Friday evening by... [more]

Our Lady of Walsingham Church and School
Attending the Senior School, my memories are of the dinner dances that where held in the school hall to raise money to pay for the church and school, many of the events where organised by the local church organisations and the priests, particularily Canon Brennan, father Condon and Father Bailey, each played their own UNselfish part in the running of the... My most vivid memory of school is walking past the church and on to the wooden huts at the back. These huts were the infant school. I think that they came from an old POW camp. They were heated by old pot-bellied stoves that burned coke from the iron works (a by-product of making steel). I will always remember the smell... [more]

My family and I lived in Stocks Lane, Drury's Garage was next to us at the top on the corner. The house we lived in still looks exactly the same today as it did so many years ago. Sadly Drury's house, which is shown in the picture, is in a dreadful state and new flats are in place of the garage.... [more]

Northamptonshire Photographic Memories
Contrast and compare this photograph with the 1950s images of Geddington, and you can see that the village has hardly changed at all in the intervening years. Various figures can be seen seated by the 40-ft Cross, which rises from seven steps at the point where three roads meet.

Northamptonshire Living Memories
Geddington, by-passed by the A43, is a delightful stone-cottaged backwater. Here the photographer looks south-east towards the church of St Mary Magdalene. The village shop, with its prominent Woodbine and Capstan cigarette advertisements, has since been converted into a house. The church has an Anglo-Saxon nave and much 13th-century work, as well as a 14th-century clerestory and chancel.

Geddington is three miles from Kettering. This picturesque village is celebrated for the Eleanor Cross, built in 1294 as a memorial to Queen Eleanor, the wife of King Edward I. The great cross rises from seven steps at the point where three roads meet. Geddington is famous for its May Day tradition of distributing bread throughout the village. In the morning... [more]
