Winter at The Hall
As a boy I remember the big open fireplace in the main hall, and the times the large glass sheet above the fireplace falling down - this was to be a yearly thing if I recall correctly. Other memories - making our own snow skis; repairing the old greenhouse; the flying fox; tennis courts in front of the hall; playing football against Grassington School and winning; an old schoolmate playing God Save The Queen on his trumpet after being encouraged by us, then him getting into trouble. Anyone remember these days? - feel free to contact me.

RE: Winter at The Hall
I was at Netherside Hall from 1960 to 1963. The website certainly brings back a load of memories - good, bad, happy, sad and funny. Making our own canoes from fibreglass, having our own boathouse on the River Wharfe, below the school, canoeing expeditions on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, making our own skis from wood, camping trips. Lots of activities we wouldn't normally have had the opportunity to experience.
I remember taking a pair of hair clippers and scissors from home when square necks were in fashion. I came up with the idea of charging threepence a time (donations to school funds) so with permission a friend and myself proceeded. Doing great until one lad (Peter Leckie from Brighouse) decided he wanted short back and sides. After trying to disuade him we reluctantly had a go. He ended up full of bald patches! Clippers and scissors were confiscated and I was told I couldn't go on the camping trip to Sheffield. After a few days Mr. Anderton(the headmaster) changed his mind and let me go.
I was the only Catholic in the school and had to walk to church at Linton camp every Sunday, rain, snow or blow. We definitely got our excercise. My friend from Marsden - the cornet player - and myself entered a talent competition at Grassington Town Hall. Mrs.May, our music teacher, rehearsed us for weeks. The day before the contest I ended up in bed with an asthma attack, he ended up perfofming himself and won (I think nerves got to me). Great memories, I'm sure there's a lot more that could be contributed to this website.

Tibble ya bugger, How you doing? I remember the hair cutting incident very well. However your barbering skills would be a tag wasted on me these days - and for the record, it was a crew-cut I wanted not short back and sides - anyway I think David Holmes did win the competition at Grassington Town Hall, with 'Gloria In Excelis'
I notice Peter Fitzakerley has posted a comment and Stanley Hazelwood (remember him) Head boy before me - well he's on friends reunited along with Ian Beedham.
And talking of good times what about the 'escape committee' I ran with Ken Rotherforth and Co, and all those midnight raids on the kitchen (poor old Mr Fell) the school Chef never did twig - and we only got rumbled when we came across another 'raiding party'. And what about the ghost stories (the Grey Lady and the like) scared the pants off some of the lads Oh yes and what about the séance's in the loft.
Threepence it seems, was the going rate for almost everything - I used to rent out my transistor radio for 3d a week. But that wasn’t for school funds.
And Bug (Mr Anderton) what a top guy
It's great to hear from you David. And I would be delighted to hear from anyone else from those days.
