More about this scene

Gravesend has two Victorian piers: the Royal Terrace Pier of 1843 lies to the east of the slightly earlier Town Pier we see in this view. Reached via a cobbled yard in front of The Three Daws pub, and visually obstructed by the high sea wall, the pier is somewhat run down, unlike the Royal Terrace Pier. The Wealdway long distance footpath now starts here.

Memories of Gravesend, the Ferry 1902

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Gravesend, The Ferry 1902

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

This a request on behalf of my daughter and her partner. They are renovating a house in Old Road West which they think is Victorian. I have found the occupants there in the 1901 Census but not in the 1891. It is possible that the houses there were built in the 1890s. Is there anyone who might know more...perhaps memories passed down through families.
I worked on the Gravesend - Tilbury ferries for around 18 months. I crewed both passenger and car ferries. Unfortunately in those days we did not have expensive cameras or any camera to record our time there. I was born in Gravesend and left to join the RAF in 1960. I have never been back to live, only to visit family.
I can still remember waiting on this pier for the 'Royal Daffodil'  or the 'Royal Sovereign' during my childhood, for our day trip up the river. We would do this trip regularly whilst on holiday with my Grandparents in Northfleet. It was one of my favourite days out. Julia (Weekes)
I arrived in Gravesend in 1958 on the back of my boyfriend's motorbike, we had travelled from Colchester in Essex. My father, who was in the army, had been posted to Gravesend so we all had to move. We crossed the river Thames on the Tilbury to Gravesend Ferry and so landed and rode off the ferry and up the High Street to find the house where my parents had moved into.
