Fond Memories

Dawnay Road c1955

I grew up at No 12 Dawnay Rd and stayed here until about 1975. This picture was taken from the Dorking Road, at the time we had a shop (grocers) which was run by Harry Absolem and his daughter Diane on the right hand corner. A lovely red telephone box stood on the right hand corner of this picture as well. Grass land to the left was were we played as children and hid. As you progess down the road very few people had cars or garages. Most had lovely front gardens and at about no 24/26 a chap called Harry Tuck grew the most fabulous Dahlias!.

RE: RE: Fond Memories

I was the errand boy for Harry Absolem from about 1943 until 1945 when I was 14 and started work in London.

RE: RE: Fond Memories

Sorry Sue - some of your facts are quite wrong. The shop on the corner of Dawnay Road and Dorking Road was built by my Grandfather Henry Absalom for his sons Harry Absalom (my father) and Alma Absalom (my uncle). All the time that the building was a grocers shop it was owned by the Absaloms. I (Diane Absalom) helped out my father in the shop after my mother died. The photo shows our house in Dawnay Road. (The first on the right) which my father had built and both my sister and I were born there. In fact I only moved out of the house about 8 years ago. I too remember the gentleman who used to grow chrysanths. His name was in fact Harry Tutt and he used to supply my mother with clothes props from Bookham woods. Both his wife and his daughter used to play stoolball at the rec.
