Growing Up In Greenford From 1942 To 1973

A Memory of Greenford.

I was born in Perivale Maternity Hospital as were my daughters..Lived the first 5 years in Greenford Road after which we moved to Greenford Gardens. The first infants school I went to was Oldfield, then on to Costons Junior followed by Coston girls school, had some good times there, headmistress was Mrs Humphries...Ravenor Park and Horsenden Hill were two of our stomping grounds,we also used to walk up to what we called the bunny park....My sister and I joined the Brownies and then the 1st Greenford girl guides..We became members of Greenford choir which wax held in Oldfield Lane near the Church, also Ealing Choir which was joint with the Greenford choir...When I left school in 1957, I worked for Aladdid until I left in 1965 when I started a family,my husband and I lived in Farndale Crescent for a few years before moving to Sunnycroft Road,I now live in Aylesbury...my parents moved to Ravenor Park Road where my brother still lives,he was a scout leader for 1st Greenford also in the Police Force in Greenford (Bob Claridge) my sister moved to Northolt...I had a good friend whilst I was at school, her name is Barbara Olney!but have lost contact with her,so hopefully she will see this and get in contact...Greenford has changed a lot, don't think there are any of the smaller shops left such as Lists the bakers, apart from Tesco and Sainsburys.

I also went to Costons school I was born at 261a oldfield lane Greenford which was by Greenford station which was build by the German prison of war.
I am now 77 and still miss the freedom we knew as children roaming around the corn fields and then up to horsenden hill.
I was in the 1st Greenford cubs, scouts and senior scouts, as they were then called. I remember Bob Claridge as our scout leader and have many memories of our scout camps. Greenford has changed a lot, as have most of greater London. I now live in North Somerset but still love coming back to London, which I still believe is one of the greatest cities in the world. I recently went to Greenford to take some photos of Hill Rise where I used to live. I couldn't believe that houses or flats have been built right next to the tube line where they used to repair all the old freight trucks. I went with my partner to Horsendon Hill just to show her where we used to spend most of our Summer holidays. Not as I remember it!! When very young we were also allowed to play by the Grand Union Canal on our own. That certainly wouldn't be wise these days.
