Nursery

A Memory of Hextable.

Hi, I lived in Hextable from about the age of 9 until I was 17, when I joined the WRAF. We lived in New Road and there was a nursery opposite where we lived and the road was UN made. There was also an agricultural college in College Road.

The school was not there, the site of the school was what we knew as the avenue with a lot of trees where we would walk the dog.

I am going back to the 60's early 70's. I did a paper round in Rollo Rd and on the corner of Rollo Rd and College Rd was a family run chemist.

At that time it was known that you couldn't get drunk, couldn't get married and you couldn't be buried in Hextable, as there was no church no pub and no graveyard. Church services used to be held in the old school at the end of College Rd where I belonged to the choir. All services Christenings, funerals etc were held in Swanley village.

Opposite Hextable school Rowhill Rd, was a school for children, I think with learning difficulties and disabilities.

It is also reported that there was a battle fought during Roman times up at Rowhill.

I used to cycle to Swanley when I first started work.

I attended Hextable primary when the head master was Mr Thomas, and I went to Swanley what was then one of the first Comprehensive schools in Kent and the head master was Dr Henry.

I also used to cycle from Hextable to Sutton - at - Hone to go horse riding!

There was also a great sweet shop in Hextable that was owned by a Polish refugee from the war. He used to have every kind of sweet you could want and threepence or better still sixpence went a long long way!!!!!
