More about this scene

This church, with its seemingly unfinished tower, is an important example of 12th-century architecture. The round-headed doorways and windows are typically Norman. The south door is notable, too, for its iron scrollwork. One of Heybridge's main industries, an ironworks, surrounded the church and vicarage on three sides.
