The Early Years 1955 1959

A Memory of Hurn.

My name is Robin Tingle and I was at Hurn Court School till 1959. The early set up was quite different, as Mr E R Morris was headmaster and the Principal was Mr P G Tyler, his son taught English. There was also a Mr Cottrell, who had a house built in the grounds and was the finance behind the School. As far as pupils at that time, there was the son of Ivor Bueb the racing driver and a David Warwick whose father Captain Warwick went on to Captain the QE2. Otherwise for teachers and pupils alike it was a melting pot, as we had all come from other boarding schools of very varying abilities and some local day pupils. There used to be a web site that listed many teachers and pupils which seems to have disappeared, it would be interesting to fill in the early names though. Mr Morris had come from Rendcombe College. Essentially the early school was representative of so many boarding schools that started up at that time relying on semi retired teachers as the salaries were not very good. It was originally launched as a school that concentrated on practical applications rather than academic prowess. I scanned the local papers for that period and have found no reference to the start up.

My name is Peter Harrison and I was at Hurn Court from late 1960 to 1965. I remember both the headmaster Mr Morris and Mr Cottrell. I was one of three Harrison's at the time and became Harrison Minor. I remember a Mr Bisham, but not his function. He was always on the train when we came down from London.
I moved to France to follow my career and unfortunately lost touch with all my old friends. I remember Michael Waterer, who's father had a Plant Nursery and another friend called Tombes, but I cannot recall his Christian name..
It was a very good school and I have fond memories.
