Childhood Memories Of Kenton

A Memory of Kenton.

I was born in 1941 and lived in Ilmington Road until the age of 7 when we moved down the road to Donnington Road to a house my father (a builder who built a fair amount of Kenton) built during the war. He was told that if someone didn’t move In then it would be repossessed , needless to say we moved in. Our house was backing onto the park and on the corner next to what became St Gregorys School. Looking at the photos brings back such good memories. My sister had her wedding reception at the Rest Hotel and when I got married in 1964 I lived in Becmead Avenue. I also remember Sainsbury’s and half a shoulder of lamb for 10 shillings, how things have changed. Down the road from the hotel going towards Kingsbury was a dress shop from which over the years I was the proud owner of many a lovely dress.

The dress shop you mentioned would most likely have been Astora (168 Kenton Road). It was trading there for many years. It always struck me as rather grand for a little place like Kenton.

It was one of several shop units that was incorporated into a large lighting and electrical wholesalers that is there now.
The lady who ran it was called Mrs Woolf and I will never forget how My mum and I went there in 1969 for her to buy a dress for my brothers bar mitzvah. She showed us to some very ordinary dresses on a rail that were not suitable and my mum spotted a beautiful beaded gown hanging up at the back of the shop and asked about it. Mrs Woolf said " Oh no you could not afford that one" Needless to say we walked out and went to Golders Green where Mum bought a very expensive beautiful dress in Roberta which was far supierior to Astoria!
