Kilburn In The 50's

A Memory of Kilburn.

Although I was born in Yorkshire in 1944 due to the bombing around London, my formative years were at Honiton Road, Kilburn, and yes, I was one of many that went to Salusbury Road School, from the infants and juniors to the senior school. The first 'youth club' I remember was at the church next to the library, and to have the use of the church hall, you had to go to the Sunday church service - what a laugh as I was a Catholic and going to church twice on a Sunday, my dad ( bless him) would have been horrified. But had some great times at the youth club, we used to sit on the library seats after the club before going down to the Chippie round the corner from the Falcon. Never did like that pub, but the Albert Edward was the one for me. I had some great friends, and you know who you are, and sadly lost contact with them. I left Kilburn in 1961 to go into the WRAF, and mum and dad moved to Aylesbury, in Bucks.
My service life didn't last long, as I married in 1963 and my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in 2013 - with 3 children Yvette, Paul and Wendy and 3 grandchildren. We sure did some travelling with 3 years in Germany with the RAF then 4 years in Singapore (my husband was a licensed aircraft engineer with Singapore Airlines) and now finally Australia, where my husband worked for Qantas and I worked for a French bank. Obviously, we are now both retired, but come back to the UK every year to see the family. I do have some fond memories of Queens Park, Grange Park, the State not only for films but the dancing, the swimming baths in Granville Road, and yes passing the pie and mash shop with the live eels (Uuughh!)

But the main reason I'm back this year is the Salusbury Road School reunion. Which will be on 7th July 2016 at 2pm I believe people will be meeting at the Salusbury Wine bar - so come along and have a laugh!

Hi, ahhhhhh shame I missed that Salusbury Road reunion in July 2016 as I went to the school's Infant and Primary schhols until about 1963. Does anyone remember any of the teachers there during that period eg Mr Tutchill (touch the blue paper and stand well clear!!) or Mr Harris the Head of the Juniors, Miss Butterfield, Miss Cherquin head of Infants, Miss Lantern, Miss Lyons etc
Besides the school itself does anyone remember anything about the builders merchants to the right of the school looking towards Salusbury Road? It later became the Aras na Gael and then the Corrib Rest and who knows what it next will be called as it is closed now!! I'd love any memories of the builders merchants as I'm doing some local history research and remember going to that builders merchants ie the site of the Corrib Rest with my late dad - ireonically we held his post funeral get together there - funny old life hey!!
Miss Lyons was my teacher at Salisbury Road infants school in the early 50's. Derek Tutchell was my teacher when I moved to the junior school and I also remember Mr Harris. I left in 1958. I'm now 70 and live in Southern Spain. It would be nice to talk to anyone who was around at that time. Peter Buckley
