It is Saturday in Kingston Market Place, and swarms of shoppers have descended to see the fresh produce on offer that might supplement the wartime rationing that was still in force. Did many of these people consider that the Market Place was the scene for punishment of miscreants in the past? In 1572 'rogues and vagabonds' were whipped around the market place and their ears branded. The stocks and pillory were placed beside the Town Hall, which later became the Market Hall.

Started school at st peters infants i think it was Hawks rd .it wasnt far from cambridge gardens .my father was Philip Healey and mother was Vera Healey (nee Butler)Dad was an engineer in various places and my gran had house in youngs buildings .
I was born in Kingston in 1946 and moved with my parents to Bookham in 1961. My family connections to Kingston go back centuries and I am having great fun tracking them back. As one who was born in Kingston Hospital before WWII, I grew up not far away in Long Ditton. My job in the late 1940s was to go to Kingston Market on Christmas Eve and buy a goose for our Christmas dinner from Follets, when they auctioned them off. Kingston has certainly changed but it is nice to see some things remain the same - the Market House, the statue to Shrubsall's Bank, etc.,
