The parish church of St Mary’s was formerly the Priory. There has been a Roman basilica, a Saxon shrine and a Norman church on this site, long before the present church was built. The only Norman parts of today’s church are the stones used in the re-building of the south doorway. There is also a small refuge room in the tower with a Saxon doorway and remnants from previous churches. Here we see the aisle to the left of the main church, which is the King’s Own Memorial Chapel, a museum within a church. The white ensign flown by HMS ‘Lancaster’ hangs here among the flags flown at many famous battles.
