More about this scene

Virtually unchanged today, the Royal Oak pub (left background)is still trading. The elves on their toadstools in the foreground have disappeared - a life-saving device now stands on the spot between where the two elves once were. It seems a little odd to see a windmill so near the shore. The author and aeronautical engineer Neville Shute lived here between 1934 and 1940 when he worked at Portsmouth Airport.

This garden belonged to the artist Oscar Prentice, who taught me to paint as a small child ,his house and studio can't be seen in this photo ,the gnomes all held fishing rods ,no vandalism in those days .
