Gwent memories
1950s
My grandfather worked at this site, his name was Albert Cook. I wonder if anyone remembers him? He retired I think in 1960 I was about nine then and I remember him getting a clock and a party was held. He had black spots on his hands he, always said it was from TNT, I wonder if anyone else experienced this?
Llanfrechfa Granger Nursing Home
I don't know when it opened as a nursing home nor when it closed and can find no information of that period but I was born there in September 1945 at a cost of 3 17s 6d (I still have the original invoice!) and proud to have been born in Llanfrechfa, where I was also confirmed and eventually married (for the first time) in August 1966 at All Saints' Church. And I used to visit the 'Gate Hangs Well' pub. Though it has been many years since I was back in Llanfrechfa, it is my birthplace and I will tell everyone that fact even if Llanfrecha is not known to many... though it has had to be translated into Arabic many time during my travels much to the puzzlement of the translator!
Can Anyone Remember
My name is Tereesa Shackell now (was Torrington0, I lived in 4 Ty Freeman Road Gwehelog. I have three brothers and went to the little school in Gwehelog in 1959. Can anyone send me any information please? I used to hang out with Christine and Rosemary Schultz and Ann Bignell. My brothers name is Howell Torrington. My teacher's names were Mrs Davies and Miss Mortimer.
Latest Residents
Purchased by the current residents in 1978. Sadly, decline in the village population resulted in closure of the Old Post Office in 1980 and a change in name to Is y llan. Aside from renovation the property remains unchanged.
My Schooldays at Caerleon Endowed School
Our family moved to Brook Cottage, Llandegveth, in about 1945 when Dad went to work for Mr Joe Shepherd at Ty Capten Farm, and my three brothers, Arthur, David Noel and I would catch the canvas covered charabanc (bus) to Caerleon school. The Headmaster was Mr Lovatt and the bus belonged to Mark Howells Ltd of Caerleon. Noel and I, being the youngest were in the infants and the worrying part was having to go to bed in the afternoon on canvas camp beds in the class room. No one told me that we would be packed off home at the required time, and as a result I would lie terrified that the bus with Arthur and David on it would go and leave Noel and I behind. My friend was Arthur Tucker from a farming family at Llandegveth and I also recall Bobby Snook, Lelie Hammett, Leslie Bowditch, Barbara Trickey and Brian Harris. Robert Bassett.
The Vines, Ashwell
This picture of Ashwell Ref 32643 (Caerleon Old Village) is of 'The Vines'. My grandparents David Charles and Winifred Ethel Jenkins lived there during the 1940's/50's. I myself was born at 1A Ashwell Villas (not built when this 'photo was taken). I attended Caerleon Endowed from 1946 until 1954 when we moved to Gloucestershire. I spent many happy years in the village and had many friends with whom I have sadly lost touch with. After we left the village in 1954, the next time I visited Caerleon was in circa 2000 I met up with an old friend from Caerleon Endowned, Valerie Shierson who having earlier emigrated to Canada was visiting friends in the area. We had a great time visiting old haunts and exchanged many memories. I have since written a short story about my early schooldays in Caerleon entitled 'Both Sides of the River' by Cosette Allsopp (nee Lloyd). Google it - You may even find that you or somebody you know is mentioned !
Pontrhydyrun - Avondale Road
I am Roger Davies of 11 Avondale Road, DOB 19.09.43. Went to Sebastopol Infants school 1948 and then to Griffithstown Junior Mixed - Bryn Jones prior to 11+ ! West Mon 1954. - Harrison, Garnet, et al. Recall Pontnewydd and Cwmbran as was and have some photos. Recall Sebastopol and Pontrhydyrun stations functioning and accidents when tall vehicles hit railway bridge at Pontrhydyrun. Percy Pritchard was our neighbour and another Trevor John worked at Gwent Pipes. Recall the building of the 'New Town'. My good friend is Ernie Bradford - The Mountain Air - visited pub with my father in the 1940's - Ernie was there then and is now. I have some photographs showing pupils at Sebastopol and Griffithstown in my years. My uncles Jack & Ken Jones ran Jones Fashion Shop, George Street, Pontypool and Broad Street Blaenavon. Jack later had The Helmaen, near Usk. What say anyone ?
