Piano Playing Record
A Memory of Cleethorpes.
In the 1950's I recall that there was an open sided marquee with a stage erected in the grassed area of Dolphin Gardens and a lady with a grand piano was installed on the stage. She was attempting the record for non-stop piano playing. I believe her target was 7 days which she reached though she appeared to be in an almost semi-conscious
state after going a week without sleep.
My recollection is that she had a 5 (or maybe 10) minute break every hour. I saw her towards the end of her marathon and although her fingers were hitting keys and making a sound it wasn't really music playing and there was no tune and there were seconds between each note.
My memory is quite clear about this event though I would concede that it could possibly have been a man playing but I remember it as a largish lady with a man on stage looking after her.
