Dartford Heath

A Memory of Dartford.

The Nissan huts on the heath became a teddy bear factory after the war. My aunt worked there making bears, I still have one, its been with me for 63years. Sad A. My aunt became a seamstress making nurses uniforms in Joyce Green Hospital.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the info re the Nissan huts on the Heath. I live in Adelaide, South Australia. Bye for now Barb Lucey
Hi Tom, I wonder if you knew George Griffiths? He said he was in the "South Street Gang" My late husband and I met him and his wife Betty some years ago. sadly he died some time ago. He lived in Australia for a long time. Hope to hear from you. Barb
I've been vindicated! Whenever I spoke of the Teddy Bear factory in the Nissan huts no one believed me! Our next door neighbour, Mrs Lee (Sue) worked there. I have a very clear memory of being given a large golden bear for my fifth birthday. He growled when you bent him over. Not sad to still have yours. I've no idea of what happened to my bear but I've never forgotten him.
Sorry missed your comment. I remember George Griffiths who drove for the Dartford Wharfage. He had a bad accident on Wrotham Hill. He later worked in the work shop stores.
Regards Tom (Sid).
It seems only us two remembers the bear factory.
Regards Tom (Sid)
Thanks Sid for the info re George Griffiths. I have found more

Dartfordians about the Teddy bears in the Nissan huts. Thanks for your help. Keep in touch Barb
Hi - I have just found this thread- my Great aunt worked at the factory and I too have a bear that has been passed down the family. My great Aunt was profoundly deaf and mute and many places at that time would not employ her due to her disability but happily the factory did !
I have just found this thread too, I was so happy to read this as my Nan worked in the teddy bear factory and not many people remember this existing. She made me my first teddy when I was born, I still have him although he is a bit worse for the wear, sadly. My Nan was Sue Lee, who lived next door to you, lynm82. I have a photo somewhere of all the staff standing outside the factory.
