Moorside Road Shops

A Memory of Flixton.

This picture is taken from the roundabout at the junction of Moorside road and Woodsend Road. The Shopping Centre featured on another of these photographs is behind the photographer and to the right, about 150m away. The shop just peeping in on the right hand side of the picture is the Post Office. The row of shops visible on the right-hand side of Moorside Road included a butchers - the first one (H G Holt), a bakers, a chemist and at least one grocers (Meadow Dairy? not sure about that one) plus others I can't remember now.

Hi Roger. Thanks for bringing back the memory of Moorside Road. As I recall one of the first stores was what we called "the old chippy" Nice to see your placing your memories of Flixton online for others to read. Francis Frith keeps me up to date with events around Flixton and Urmston. I now live in southern Alberta. Take care and best regards Barry Jones formerly of Woodsend Road
Great memories. I lived on Irlam Rd. Used to go to these shops all the time. Chippy was great.
Well, well! Barry Jones - must be nearly 50 years since we last saw each other. We lost touch
if I remember correctly when I left Manchester to go to college full-time in Coventry. Never really
went back until I moved back to Urmston in 2016.

I remember the greengrocer - originally McKnights, then Charmians if I remember correctly.

The newsagent you mention was originally Fishers, then Prestage and then Haslam. Ken Haslam eventually worked at Shell Carrington, and drove a rather large Jaguar.

Now (2018) those shops are all completely different of course.

Best wishes, if you see this.

Roger.
Barry, hello. I responded to another of your comments a few minutes ago. I hope you see
both this one and the other one.

I'm now back in Urmston after 46 years away!

I remember your house on Woodsend Road, also that of Billy and Jean Tate (I too cannot remember the name of the youngest child). IIRC, the two Victorian houses were demolished
to make way for a new development of about 12 modern semis, and your family and the Tates
moved into two of those new houses when I was about 10/11 (?). I also remember brother Bob and sister Ann. One of the other houses was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Cowan when they retired,
they used to own the other grocery shop at the Woodsend Road shops - the centre one between
the Redd Arrow shop and Traynors the butcher.

We lost touch in about 1968 when I moved away to full-time college in Coventry. I never
really went back till 2016...

I often wondered what had happened to you and where you ended up - now I know!
My Gramps owned H G Holt. Its great see it again. I wounder if anyone had any more memories of the shop or more pictures. Thanks. Chris.
