Memories Of Heston From 1940 S

A Memory of Heston.

I remember Mrs Ballard at the hairdressers in The Crossways. I did some hair modelling for her at one time when she employed a hairdresser called Freda. We went up to London and Freda won a certificate with my hairstyle which was a bit space age. I lived in Sutton Square and went to
Heston Infants and Junior School. I remember the summers in the 'back park' which had quite an amount of swings etc. We used to use candle wax on the slide to make the journey faster and the park keeper used to tell us off. He used to spend most of his day in his hut. Robin used to walk round the park at night ringing a bell to tell everyone the park was closing. He lived next to my aunt in Crossways. Does anyone remember going to Mrs Lock's dance 'studio' in one of her rooms and dancing on lino, also Margo Sampson's dancing classes. I remember the pig bin on the corner of the square for left over bits of food to make pig swill, the rag and bone man. Rossi's ice cream van stopping 3 times round the square to catch everyone. Henry helping the milkman who came round the square with a horse. There used to be an alleyway running from near Church Road to The Crossways where we used to find silver foil dropped by the Germans to scramble radar. Too much to recall. Might add some more later. Married at Heston Church 2nd February 1963, snowed all day. My name was Carrol Baldry.
