Former Pupil 1957 1963

A Memory of Rotherham.

My maiden name is Lynda Roworth, and I have fond memories of attending Rotherham High School for Girls. I played hockey (right wing) for the school team - Christine Cutts was the first captain I remember. We rarely had school dances (I remember 2, attended by only 5 and 6 formers) - the boys from the Grammar School across town attended, and Miss Potts (the domestic science teacher patrolled the premises with her flashlight!!) The quality of education I received was 1st class - it's strange how some staff members remain in your mind - Mrs. Jones (Biology - one year we were joined by the boys from the Grammar school for classes - that was quite an event!!)), Miss Catcliffe(Geography), Mrs. Quine (Art), Mrs. Stables (History), Mrs. Lowe (English). Some of my formers classmates were: Glenys Cook, Kathleen Beckingham, Lesley Barrow, Susan Holland, Barbara Blackham, Pamela Vickers, Margaret Smith, Caroline Taylor (her father was the Rotherham Director of Education). I left England in 1968 to live in Toronto for 2 years, then relocated to the USA where I have lived for the past 42 years.

Just noticed your memory and read it properly. We overlapped for a few years (see my memory of smoking in the air raid shelters) and I recognise quite a bit of what you say. My memory of Miss Potts is being taught how to wash dishcloths; as I say in my bit, I used to ballboy for Chris Cutts and now I remember the name of her partner Lesley Barrow. I went out with Caroline Taylor's younger brother for about four years. Isn't it amazing how important those early memories are!
