More about this scene

Our picture features Winter's jewellery shop and Petersgate Bridge. The bridge was built in 1868 to link the market square with St Petersgate. Jacob Winter moved his shop to Little Under Bank in about 1880. The three figures on the outside of the building strike bells every 15 minutes. Security-conscious Winter had the contents of his shop windows displayed on a stage system that could be lowered into the cellar by means of a hydraulic lift; it was operated by natural spring water.

I remember going to Vernon Park so well. We would walk down from Bredbury Bar. There was a large slippery stone at the top of the steps and Mum would lift me to the top and I would slide down. I thought that stone was magic. There was a large bird cage in the park but I think its gone now. The museum was a favorite and when I was about 13 I used to find fossils in Castleton near the Blue John Mines and take them to ...see more
