This colossal building, once home of the controversial Greater London Council, was designed by Ralph Knott and begun in 1912. Though it sits heavily on the Embankment, its broad facades and massed arches in the Piranesi style bring it a monumental dignity.’

My brother and his wife, having met at 14, got married at 20. My brother was an apprentice motor mechanic and his fiance a trainee hotel receptionist, so money was tight and they had no idea where they were going to live and how they would be able to afford their own home.
