More about this scene

Summer Hill House, on the west side of Charmouth Road, was the Victorian home of the borough magistrate Walter Banfield Wallis. Then the house became nationally known for the most liberal educational regime in the land. Summerhill School was founded here in 1924 by the child psychologist Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973). As described in his autobiography 'Neill! Neill! Orange Peel!', it was a free school for the problem children of problem parents. The name went with it when Neill moved the school to Leiston, Suffolk. Meanwhile, at Lyme in 1930, Mrs T G Miles was the proprietress of Summerhill Private Hotel. It has since been greatly extended, with additional wings, and converted into prestigious apartments.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

my name is ray hallett and i lived here in 1969. our flat was on the first floor , on the left. I remember hearing an owl hooting in the large tree at night and was convinced that the place was haunted .The house was then owned by herbie hallett ,no relation. It was infested with mice , my mother once opened the oven door to see a mouse sitting there cleaning his whiskers .I think it is such a shame that it was not saved and only photos remain.
