More about this scene

Despite the brickwork at the east end, Marton's church of St James and St Paul is one of the oldest surviving timber churches in Europe - it was founded in 1343 by Sir John de Davenport, and hence the pub across the road is called the Davenport Arms. Internally the church is quite delightful, and it even has the remnants of an early medieval wall painting on the west wall.
