More about this scene

FOR MANY YEARS, after the decline of the weaving industry, the manufacture of rubber linked the two West Wiltshire towns of Bradford on Avon and Melksham. Although the main factory business of Avon Rubber is now in Semington, Cooper Avon Tyres, a subsidiary, still dominates Melksham. The last vestiges of the same industry in Bradford on Avon (it produced, among others things, the rubber washers used worldwide in aero- sol cans) are about to undergo commercial and residential development on the Kingston Mill site. Hand in hand with the new commercial enterprises go the preservation and renovation of the old. Both towns are very conscious of their responsibility to preserve and promote their heritage.

War Memorials

A special selection of photographs from our Archive of the War Memorials that connect us with those who fought and perished in the conflicts that have shaped the world we live in today. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."- Laurence Binyon, For The Fallen

A Selection of Memories from Melksham

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Melksham

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I am trying to find some photographs and/or information re the dairy manager's house in Shurnhold, I believe it was a Co-Op dairy and that the house was not only the manager's accommodation but also partly a shop. Above the main entrance (front door) is the date 1886, although I believe that the original part of the building is older. Any information or photos at all would be gratefully received, thanks in advance.
