Memory Of Mexborough In The Late 50's,

A Memory of Mexborough.

My name is Ian Bullett. I was born in Mexborough 1951 I can remember going to the Empire cinema with my elder brother David in the late 50's.It was a regular Saturday visit to watch Zorro and others. On one occasion we arrived to find not the usual film but a world record being attempted. It was Syncopating Sandy ( I kid you not)who was attempting to play the piano none stop for over 100 hours. We were in a dilemma- should we go in and have a look or bunk off and spend the money our mum had given us on sweets?.Our inquisitiveness got the better of us in we went.We made a bee line for the front row-only to see closed curtains with piano music playing from behind. We gave it a few minutes and thought we had been conned-how did we know it was him behind the curtains?.After a few more minutes we realised why the curtains were closed, it was not only the music escaping under the curtains but the aroma of Syncopating Sandy's ablutions.(that's why the curtains were closed). The curtains eventually opened and a 'relieved' Sandy carried on playing .We gave it a few more minutes and wished we'd bought sweets instead.Don't know if he got the record that time.It was the fashion then to attempt such crazy things.
