New Addington Memories

A Memory of New Addington.

I remember as a young boy Fairchildes school , we lived in Castle Hill Crescent and walked in all weathers to school. I remember Mr. Hedges, Mr. Breed, Mr. Watson, Mr. Fuller, Mr. Rutter Mr. Morgan, Mr. Best, Mr. Trinder, Mr. Smith, and Miss Davis plus of course Mr. Jones. I can't say it was the happiest days of my life. We used to live at 303 Castle Hill Crescent before moving to 411 Lodge Lane. I knew a few people but like everything as time goes by you lose track, I can remember the Paynes, Lawrence Peddy, Ian Coughlin , the Waywells, J. Cash, Douglas Shulver, Chrissy Thomas, Keith Bromham, Terrence Facey, Robert Nicholls, and Norman Maciver who lived at Blenheim Park Crescent South Croydon and moved to Hereford with his parents, they were very good to me and I would like to meet Norman again if anybody has information . Just thought of John Hester who lived in a prefab behind me. I visited the area a few years ago and the road names had changed, it was so different there.

Hi Peter, I also remember Mr Fuller Mr Hedges Miss Davis and ,Mr Sullivan. my family lived in Wolsey Cres, went to school with Pauline Gordon, Alan King. Marion Thornton,my name way back then Gillian Lee
worked in Croydon for a while after I left school in 1956 before moving away from the area
Hi Gillian,

Thanks for your comment, although I never remember the girls at the time I probably passed yo at sometime. I know they segregated the girls for a few years. I moved away from New Addington in around 1963, I used to go to Thornton Heath a lot as I helped a milkman from United Dairies who did Beulah ! Moffat and Livingstone Roads amongst others , the depot was at Bensham Lane and I didn't enjoy the early starts. Since then I have travelled a lot ending up in Bournemouth the last 20 years, a big change. I never thought I would own a property as it was all about rental in the 50s. We used to live in a prefab for years and it was jolly cold in the winter, no central heating then.

Take Care, Peter

Hi Gegy - my brother John went to Fairchildes and I recall him mentioning Hedges ( very favourably ) on a number of occasions. I think that Hedges was Head and later went up the ladder to Croydon Tech - certainly remember a difficult interview with him at Croydon Tech when he asked if I was as clever as my brother...
School Names that come to mind are Paul Scully, John Scott, Yvonne Coullard(?), Ian Stobart ( good cricketer ), Colin Frost who'd had polio, Billy Hastie - hard nut I bumped into a couple of times ( I think his family were Surrey St Traders.) I got the cane for a fight with him ). Others will come to me - I need to see a picture.. What a crew. No wonder the teachers had trouble..
I probably knew you, same school, lived in the same place, same time and knew most of the people on the list. I still have contact with Ian Coughlin and I can say Rob Nichols sadly passed away. I am told he was a millionaire. Boy done good.
To Peter Lester Horscroft just by chance found this site. I'm John Hester it's 60 years ago I left New Addington, remember you Peter and your parents well. I lived at number 300 the row in front of yours. Trust that life's been kind to you. Best wishes John
Hi John,

You are one person who I tried to find for a few years as I wondered how life was for you, lots happened in my life , I remember your mum who didn't like the Sun much and your dad who was a keen gardener always rushed out if he heard a horse go by ,looking if they had left him anything useful to put on his garden. If I could speak to you on the phone it would be nice, I would like You're phone number . I live in Bournemouth now.
John I will give you my number it's 01202 390505 always on answer phone if I'm not there ,5 rings and it starts recording. I must say I am glad to hear from you.
It seems we have both retained our memories. I now live in Norfolk by the coast. Remember you as a tall lad with a straight back, we always got on. A different world then, we froze in the winter and burnt in the summer, never seen snow like it since. Have you got an email address?

John, if you let me know your email I will update you how life has been over many years. I lived in Cambridgeshire and worked in Kings Lynn a few years ago so might have seen you if you ever went there.

Regards, Peter
Hi John,

I may recall you as I left in 1958 as well, I joined the army at 17 and spent about 10 years in mostly with the Army Air Corps as Aircrew/ observer on Helicopters and Light Aircraft , good times , I kept up my interest in flying when I bought a house in California. Had a neighbour who was a Navigator on bombers and took his PPL at 60 so had a Mooney 4 seater , always got trips early morning and was dual controlled so had fun. I lived in Hong Kong for 3 years and various other countries. Interesting you were in the fleet Air Arm . Hope you're well and happy. I've been fit into late 50s but not later in life but you keep going.

Take Care, Peter
