My Time In New Mills (1947 1963)

A Memory of New Mills.

I was born in Hayfield Rd during the terrible winter of 1947 (Feb), doctor Leslie Millward walked through the snow and along a huge drift to climb into our front bedroom window to attend to my birth! I was subsequently named Leslie after him.I started school after Easter 1953 in Mrs Archers class at St Georges school, the class was bursting, there were so many of us, I sat next to my life-long friend Paul Cooper, who I keep in touch with to this day.I can still reel off many names from my years at that school, some I know are no longer with us,hopefully not too many. In 1953 during coronation week we moved to Laneside rd where we lived for 10 years until our move to Brixham in Devon where I still live today. Laneside rd was full of children then and I spent many happy times playing around the area without a care as we all could in those days. we roamed up around Pingot where there was a huge tarzan swing, played cowboys in the old quarry behind Marsh Lane, terribly dangerous, but other than Barry Dent breaking his wrist I cant recall any other injuries. The years 1958-1963 were spent at New Mills Grammar School and were not the happiest times of my life. Fortunately, thanks to meeting up with Evelyn Hulse,(formerly Boyes) who for a while ran the White Hart Hotel in Dyehouse Lane with husband Mike,I was able to meet several old school friends at the pub during visits to New Mills.Although I have not lived there for 53 years I still have the fondest memories of the town and my friends there, hopefully I may meet some more old friends at some stage.Les (Leslie) Morris.
