Nostalgic memories of Normanton's local history

Share your own memories of Normanton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived in Loscoe 1964 - 1967. My mum was Eunice Cresswell and came from a family of 9. Her family lived in Goodhope Row, Normanton. I remember going to the Blue Bell woods, I went to Normanton infant school, walked across fields and fed a goat on the way. We moved to Altofts then to New Zealand in 1974. Now living in Australia.
Hi everyone, does anyone remember Beckbridge Estate, now the industrial estate? I lived at number 17 from about 1948 to 1958. It was a brilliant place to live. My dad used to have a coach and took some of the residents on fishing trips, cricket matches and day trips. Most of the men on the estate all helped build a meeting hut in which we had whist drives, beetle drives, and a Saturday club for the kids. We even ...see more
Hi everyone. I was born in 56 and lived in Normanton and Altofts until moving to Pontefract when I was 7 or 8. My grandad had a cafe down Castleford Road called Halfords. Funny how this works isn't it, saw an old film on TV where the main character gets on a steam train and my mind flew back to waiting on Normanton railway station for the train to London where my mum was working as ...see more

When I was a young un', there was only Mr Mason's shop, the old school and the Loscoe Villas still left in Loscoe - I am 41! Hi everyone, I was born and brought up in Normanton and have very fond memories of my childhood there. I lived in Cambridge St, and went to the Girls High School. I am searching for a photo of the old Mercer's shop (which is now a Specsavers) I wonder if anyone has such a photo - if so it would be lovely to see it and if possible, obtain a copy. I spent a lot of time playing there with my friend who lived in the flat above the shop. Janet Dingley (Chivers)
Was my teacher at school 1940 (ish), was MP and in the Labour government hierarchy. She lived on Castleford Road near Greens newsagents on the corner; a very strict teacher but had time for pupils. Her father was Ben Bacon who was once asked at a council meeting, "shall we get a gondola for the Hawe Hill Park Lake?" He replied, "yes, of course, get two then we can breed off them!"
Alice Bacon was my school teacher 1930/40
The 10 year old boy in the photo is me. I was fishing for sticklebacks. I remember a man pointing a camera at me. I lived at 62 Castleford Road opposite the library which is at the edge of the park. My father Jack, and my uncle Geoff ran M.E Wood & Sons bike shop on Wakefield Road opposite the bus shelter. I left Normanton in 1961 at age 17 when my mother remarried to live in ...see more
