Wellsbourne School, Abbotsford Road Secondary Modern And Old Swan Technical College
A Memory of Norris Green.
I went to Wellsbourne Road School when I was just four years old on a part time basis when my mam was working shifts in an arms factory (I was born in October 1936). I remember lining up for free school dinners separately from the other boys, but I thought no more about it. Then I went to Abbottsford Road Secondary Modern where the girls were separated from the boys with a high mesh wire fence. The headmaster was a Mr Howell. I then went on to Old Swan Technical College but then worked as an apprentice at Napiers English Electric on the East Lancs Road. All this time I was taking music lessons and taking exams at Cranes music store in Liverpool. I eventually made my way to London after joining the Argyle Theatre in Birkenhead as a young actor/piano player. This lead to engagements on radio and TV with Eric Robinson of 'Music for You' fame. I then went on to compose music for film theme music for the feature film 'On the Buses'.
