More about this scene

The original inn, which stood on the site of the London Road tollgate, was replaced in 1936 by this impressive roadhouse with its large forecourt and function rooms. In the 1950s one of the latter was the weekly venue for the North Cheam Jazz Club, which featured a youthful George Melly and the Mick Mulligan Jazz Band as a regular attraction. This building was demolished in 1964 when the site was redeveloped.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived in Langley Avenue from my birth in 1950 until we moved in 1962. I remember childhood meals at the Queen Vic and the waitresses saying I had better table manners than some of the businessmen. I went to school at Park Farm infant and junior schools and still remember friends names among the other kids there who lived on the Park Farm estate. I wonder how life has turned out for them?

Later moved to Hemingford Road and went to a boys school somewhere near Priory Road. Learned to swim at the Baths. Good friend was David Feather. Walked to cinema every Saturday with sixpence in pocket. Caught the 156 bus at corner of London Road and Wordsworth ...see more
I remember the small grocers in North Cheam with the terrazzo floor called Sainsburys. We used to go in and get the ham sliced with a machine, cheese sliced with the wire and leave my sister outside in the pram! I remember the tiled floor! I also remember Tesco, where my mother bought some mouldy cheese... we never shopped there again. I lived in Wordsworth Drive as a kid, we moved to Cornwall Road when I was 11. I went ...see more
I lived in North Cheam from when I was born (1951) until 1972. When I was young I remember shopping in Sainsburys with my mum. There was a beautiful tiled floor and the counters ran along both sides. There was a separate queue for each type of produce and the ladies all wore hair nets. I think there was a cash office where you paid for all your shopping. This shop was in the London Road, SW of the ...see more
