Happy Days
My father was in the Army stationed a Bulford in the Command Supply Depot. We lived in one of the houses in a complex called The Albany now (Aldi). I attended the C of E school at Hampshire Cross and later Tidworth Down school. I remeber the construction of the swimming pool, the brains behind that was Tom Tuxford who sadly is no longer with us. One of my biggest friends was John West, I also knew his sister Rose. I used to spend a lot of time at John's house. Some of my other friends were Brian Luckham, Geoffrey Gamble, Sheila Smith, Dawn Skinner and William Nutter, all of whom lived nearby. I had many happy times in Tidworth and was sad to leave. I was then interested in girls and was very fond of Sheila. I moved to Chester in 1962 and still live in the area. The remainder of my school years and teens were less enjoyable.
Ludgershall Road
I can remember running along this road from Tidworth Down Boys School to the Ram pub and back to the school with the PE teacher a Mr Williams shouting at us from his car. This would have been in the late 1960s. I lived in Sidbury Circular Road but when we moved in it was Nuns Walk and we lived in the last house, then they built the estate and renamed the road. My first school was the Garrison school opposite the Garrison theatre
Tidworth in The Mid 1950's
I attended this school in September of 1953 until December 1954, when I left and went to Salisbury College of Further Education. My father was in the army and we came back from Germany in July 1953 to live in married quarters at Clarendon Terrace, the regiment being in Bhurtpore Barracks. We went to Jordan in Feb 1956 but came back to UK in August 1956 because of the dangerous situation out there. We returned to Tidworth in July 1957 to Clarendon Terrace again, the regiment going into Aliwal Barracks. I got a job at W.H. Smith in Station Road and worked there until July 1959 when my Dad left the army and we moved to Rutland. I still go back to Tidworth every few years as I still have friends there from those days, I now live in Canada. Happy Days
I moved there when I was six, to number 56, right at the end, the last house in the road.I left there in 1982 after 14 very happy years. I can still remember most of the familes who lived there at the time, I have great childhood memories.
North Tidworth, Station Road
I remember playing cricket on the green here. The cinema across the road was where we once listened to Norman Wisdom - from the outside, we couldn't get in aged 12!
I visited this road July 2009 for the first time since then, and was horrified that a Tesco now stands where we played. But Furze Hill Road remains exactly as it was when I watched England win the 1966 World Cup. New windows on the houses of course, but the hill at the top of the road, then just grass, now has trees all over.
Tidworth Down School
I attended this school circa 1965. Remember the woodwork class on far right of building seen here. Football in the foreground field. The bus back to Tidworth, living in Furze Hill Road.
Home
Moved in here with my parents in 1972 and moved out in 1989. They still live there. So many memories of growing up living above a sweet shop!
Ram Inn
We moved in 1948 and on return to visit friends my mother and I were told that someone we knew had "won the pools" and had "run off then with the barmaid from this pub". I believe he won only a couple of hundred because next year he had returned and life was as normal.
