I Lived Near Where The Photographer Would Have Stood

A Memory of Oakdale.

23 Markham Crescent was the address of Albert Parsons my Grandfather whom we lived with for several years. I believe that at the time this picture was taken was the year that my Grandmother Alice Parsons died, she would have been 63 years old. I remember swinging from the cast iron lamp posts. Next door the Trimborough family (Spelling may not be correct) The Matthews Family lived at the top right of the picture and the top left the Parry family. Just out of shot on the top right lived also the Smith family and of course behind the photographer would be the Baptist Chapel which I was compelled to attend. Opposite No 23, lived the Nightingale family. Notice the lack of cars! Cars were so rare we used to collect car registration numbers and many a time did we play skipping and Hopscotch in the middle of the road. The Johnston family lived at the top right just passed the junction I was friends with Tom (Keith Johnston) his brother Ian as gone on to be Gwent Police Commissioner. Happy memories indeed, outside toilet as well, down the back steps, many a time with a lit rolled up Argus to see the way down the steps at night, that is when it was not pinned to the wall in the loo. I am 58 this year (2014) but remember it well.

I was born in Argoed Backwood. we moved to Underwood road Oakdale when I was very young. I remember starting my schooling in the infants school there which was just behind our house the school looked very futuristic. My father worked at the Oakdale pit. My second school was Rhiw Syr Dafydd until we moved away to Neath in September 1962. I've been back a few times over the years and still love the place of my roots. I have so many memories of Oakdale to this day.
Our family name was Singh back then but in the early 70's my father for some reason decided to change it back to Pierce. I wonder if anyone remembers our family.
Warm wishes to all
Gian Pierce

Hi
Please forgive me for my very late reply. I opened an account on this site in 2016 and completely forgot about it and by chance I came across it again.
I certainly remember the infants school which was built mostly of aluminium and my mother used to wave to us during break times from out back garden at 26 Underwood road. I'm feeling a mixture of joy and sadness writing this reply. I won't lose this account and will check it regulary . To hell with it. I'm going to post one of my email Aliases and it would be wonderful to hook up with old pals from long ago. ghp23@tutanota.com. Warm regards Gian.
hi,
my name is Graham Smith and I now live in Germany, but maybe you know my sister Myra Smith or my Brothers?
I went to Oakdale school until 1964. At that time we lived in Springfield Pontllanfraith. I joined the army in 1965 and about 1966 the rest of family Man, Dad, Micheal, Nigel and Myra moved to Oakdale.
If some one wants to get in touch please do.
