Pleydell Avenue Off Anerley Hill, Upper Norwood

A Memory of Penge.

Hi all......I attended Oakfield Seconday Modern School in Oakfield Road, Penge from 1952 until 57 and lived in Pleydell Avenue from the early 40's after we were bombed out of our house on Anerley Hill. I went to Anerley Primary School before Oakfield. I loved the Palace with all those bomb sites and just loads to do. We had a gang consisting of kids from Palace Square, Palace Road and Pleydell Avenue. Man! families were big in those days and I remember a particuar family in Palace Road had about 14 kids. My family were lucky as we only had 7 kids. Great old times but rough as rationing was still on until 48. We enjoyed our-selves irrespective. Would be interested in hearing from any-one from Oakfield. The only teachers I remember from that time was Mr. Evans who taught maths. Mr Walker who taught art and another master who's name I do not remember but he emigrated to Australia and became the sole teacher in a school on Christmas Island. He was a pleasant man. Well cheerio for now. Jim Hawkins.

My name is Aubrey and attended Oakfield Road School from 1952 to 1957 and I’m trying to locate Michael Tucker. He was a student in the 1950s and later a teacher at the school.
I.D. Trevor-Jones was the principal when I was there.
Hi Aubrey......my name is Jim Hawkins and I went to Oakfield School in the same years you did. Did you live close to the Roman Catholic church of St. Anthony of Padua?. I vaguely remember Michael Tucker and do remember David Leigh and Martin Farmer. Oh, also I remember Geoffrey Runham who almost broke my ankle when he bowled me out on the cricket pitch. Do you still live in Penge/Anerley?. I would like to hear from you and any-one else that was at the school during my time there such a long time ago. I live in New Zealand now and have done so since the 1980's. Cheers and keep well. p.s is Aubrey your sur-name or Christian name?.
My name is Ian and I lived at 5 Palace Square from 1972 until 1975 when the council demolished our house. We had a small park next to our house where the other houses got bombed. Palace Road and Square was very noisy but fun, our rooms on the top floor had loads of buckets and bowls in the attic to catch the rain as it leaked through the roof and our landlord was a man called mr Stroh who came every Sunday for his rent. Although the house was a dump I was happier there than the council house that we were moved to in Penge.
Hi Ian as you can see from my previous comment on this site I used to live in Pleydell Avenue, Upper Norwood. Pleydell Avenue was the road leading up to Palace Square. I remember very well the bomb site where originally many splendid homes were before the Germans bombed Crystal Palace station just off Anerley Hill, I am sure that is where the bombs came from that destroyed half of Palace Square. I, and my friends spent many a good time on that bomb site searching for shrapnel plus other games. I am trying to figure out where your house was was it at the bottom of the square where Pleydell Avenue joined up to the square or further up?. Of course after your time all those grand old houses were pulled down to make way for smaller houses. Like to hear from you if you have the time. Francis Frith have my email and if you ask them I am sure they will let you have it. Cheers Jim Hawkins.
