Grandfather's Story

A Memory of Penrith.

After reading another memory of Askham, I can remember a story my grandfather told me when I was a child. He was born in Askham in 1893 and was Christened in Askham church. His father was the Police Constable at the time and his mother worked in Lowther Castle. When my grandfather, who was called George was 7 years old, he remembered seeing the Kaiser Willhelm coming to stay at Lowther Castle. He watched the visit from under the stairs in Lowther Castle, along with the cook's son, and saw all the finery, pomp and ceremony. They were told to be very quiet. He often spoke of this and I would like to find any other memories that anyone may have of the Kaiser's visits.
