My Home Town

A Memory of Potters Bar.

I lived in potters bar all my life, until marrying in 1973 and moving to ware. My grandparents had lived here since the twentys, my dad joined the RAF in 1942, to serve his country during the Second World War. I remember well the Ritz in darkes lane, went there five days in a row to watch the great race, I was only eleven years old! Wylotts manner, thurleys toy shop mount grace school, all fond memory's! All so long ago now, but as I grow older, your early memories become so much more. Remember these characters from those days:- Jeneate brown, Paula surfield, Keith Nash, John Taylor, Steve scofield, and many more. We lived in a council house in Forbes avenue my grandad on mums side was a councilman, he helped us onto the ladder, as our prefab at lakeside potters bar was due for demolition I grew up in that house until we all moved to elmroyd avenue in 1970. Remember Jan, and trev from those days, my first serious squeeze, Lynn Pusey! Dad died in 1977, so that ended our association with potters bar, as mum moved to Hemel Hempstead. My life in potters bar was the best time of my life on this earth, I often reflect back on those days, ahh!!

Hi there, have just read your comment that you lived in Forbes Avenue and you remember Jan and Trev. Is that Jan and Trev from Chace Avenue? If so that's me Jan! I don't expect to get a reply but I will keep my fingers crossed. It would be lovely to share some memories of Potters Bar. What is your name?
Just found this website, after talking to my cousin, who is doing some family research. I was born in Potters Bar in 1941 and lived there until 1972 , when I moved to Milton Keynes .In 1945 I was living in Barnet Road, and in January there was a V2 rocket which demolished the Catholic Church in Southgate Road, about 100 yards as the crow flies from our house. At the time I was playing in the house, putting buttons under the legs of a chair when the side of our house blew in from the V2 shockwave and I was cover with broken glass. My mother went from the bedroom straight through the floor which collapsed and ended up in the front lounge. I remember being driven by car by someone driving past, who saw the house partially collapse and taken to Potters Bar Hospital to be stitched up. My earliest remembrance of life I think. My father served at El Alemein & Monte Casino and came home without a scratch - bit ironic really !
