Preston Capes School. 1958

A Memory of Preston Capes.

At 5 years old I went on a school bus from Charwelton to Preston Capes school. It was 1 big classroom with coke fires and an outside toilet. Mrs Smith taught all the children of mixed ages. She had 2 blackboards, one was written in printing and the other in "real" handwriting. We each had a cardboard box to keep our work in. Dinner would arrive in a van packed in sealed boxes to keep it warm.
The playground had huge trees at the bottom where the ground was compacted by all the little feet that had run around it. We did Maypole dancing in the spring.
There were no Wendy Houses or toys, just bean bags and balls with holes in which would trap your fingers!
Happy Days....
