A Memorable Junction

A Memory of Putney.

Whenever I look at old pictures of this junction, I think of a very modern-looking 1960s shop which had its address as its name: 'No. 1 Putney Hill'. Its (future) location is on the left of the picture ahead of the bus. I saw it every day when I got off the 37 to walk up Putney Hill to my school. I remember it as being a bit like a mini Habitat, selling gifts and items for the home, but I could be wrong. In any case, it seemed to me like the only really modern shop in Putney at the time.

My parents had their wedding reception at Zeeta's in 1945. As a little girl, I accompanied my mother to the old-style Sainsburys in Putney High Street (complete with payment kiosk), and later on got my school uniform at Cuffs. Strong memories - and very happy ones!

My Dad was a Thames Waterman and was given vouchers to help pay for my school uniform. These vouchers had to be exchanged at Cuffs so every year at this time we would take the 37 bus from Isleworth to Putney High Street in order to get my new uniform. Very clear memories. Blessings x

Lawks !

I remember this, I used to queue for the bus to take me up the hill to school 1965-1970, just to the left on the far side - I preferred the 98 - since it was the old RTW rather than the No 85 Routemasters. it avoided the scrum of 150 children all trying to get on the bus that got them a few yards closer at their destination - nothing changes doe's it - witness parking at your local supermarket.
I used to live at the bottom of Lower Richmond Rd in Horne Way and my mother bought my dresses from Cuffs, which I loved. Later, I made my own clothes and got the material in Cuffs. Does anyone remember Neatawear which was on the right hand side of the High St? I loved the library as well- I was allowed to go there alone on a Saturday morning while still at primary school! Martin Ford was another small chain store teenage girls haunted. Skirts at 19/11d! A very safe and happy place to grow up.
I also lived at the bottom of Horne way in the flats Pearson House and my mum worked in cuffs. Great place to grow up lots of freedom.
