THe Nurden Family History Book.

Upminster Road c1960

My name is Dennis Nurden, I have a twin sister Valerie, we lived in Sunningdale Ave when Murex sports ground was there. Though not born there we did all our schooling there and left when we were about 18yrs old. At school I did paper rounds and worked on Saturdays in Castle Sports, the shop left in photo. My father Sydney Edward Nurden and his family were from Rainham and some are still living there today. My father was in the army and died in 1944 (injured in France). His name is on the War Memorial at The Clock Tower in Rainham, both my parents(mother Lucy Maud Nurden) are buried in the cemetary in Upminster Rd, as are others from the Nurden family. Rainham was a great place to grow up, Lambs Lane Secondary Modern had just opened when I was there in the early 50s with beautiful sports fields. As kids playing on the Rainham marches looking for old cartridges left behind at the rifle ranges and playing on the concrete barges on the side of the Rainham Creek I think it was. Buying an OXO cube for a farthing to suck on the way to school and my dad's brother uncle Charlie Nurden taking us into the Firbanks the newsagents to buy us sweets. Those were the days, I often think about growing up in Rainham, happy days. Born 1942 I went to school with John Homans, the man that posted the other message on Rainham. Although now living in Australia, Rainham is never very far away. Memories.

RE: RE: THe Nurden Family History Book.

Dennis, we are related.
My grandfather was Charles Henry Nurden, your father's brother. Charles's daughter was my mother, Violet Elizebeth Nurden (Vi, or as she was called, 'Girlie'). He also had a son named Ronald and another daughter named Peggy. My dad's surname was Scarrott.

A lot of Nurdens still live in Rainham and when I was a child I lived in East Ham and then Woolwich. Every Sunday I cycled to Rainham to see my grandad Charlie and his other brother Bill in the 1950s. I can still remember playing in the Rainham marches with Grandad's sons Billy and David and getting tea from Aunt Emma (Bill's wife).

My uncle, grandad's son Ronald Nurden, still lives in Bexlyheath and I'm still in contact though I live on the Isle of Wight and work in Africa.

Email me if you can as I have a picture of your Dad 'Sid' with my grandad in or around the 1930s in Bournemouth.

Regards, John Scarrott.

RE: RE: THe Nurden Family History Book.

This is for John Scarrott.

I am Valerie Beal (sister to Dennis Nurden) and wanted to thank you for the photo you sent Dennis of my dad and Charlie. I have had it copied on to photo paper and it has been edited so there are no marks at all. The girl who did it made a great job and I cam sending Den a copy.

I have moved back from Bexleyheath to Grays in Essex although I do not like it as much. You sound like you have a very interesting life. It is one country I have not been to but one on my list.

Well, I will close now and thank you again.

Valerie Beal (nee Nurden)

RE: RE: THe Nurden Family History Book.

Hi I live in the house on the corner of Upminster Road South and Pinewood Avenue. I know that our house used to be a shop, back in the 1950s I think. It was a dry-cleaners at one time and I would be really interested if anyone remembers it and has any information about it. It was originally owned by a family named Smith. Thank you.
