Royston Army Camp.

A Memory of Royston.

Was posted to camp in 1954 and demobbed in 1957.Was called up for National service but the CO persuaded you to sign on as a regular and you got 28 days leave.Probably nowadays they would be Court Marshalled for suggesting that.
Vividly remember the daily trips to Cambridge to work at the A vehicle depot which was to supply the Army with all types of vehicles and it was freezing cold laying on the floor of the trucks trying to sleep.I had an AFV licence so drove every type of vehicle Tanks ,Armoured cars, Jeep’s,Trucks Motorcycles etc.
Remember the CO Lt Colonel Garside, quite a tyrant and used to treat the National service officers worse than the other ranks.Funny enough I ended up as his driver and drove him all over the country, including his girl friends house at 10 o clock at night.
Camp was strictly run so therefore good accomodation and food and lovely heating
Glad to have the memories
