More about this scene

Westwards from Folkestone, and now linked to it as a suburb, Sandgate shared in the popularity of its neighbour as a seaside resort around the turn of the century. Near the cliffs in the distance are the remains of the castle built by Henry VIII in 1539 as part of his coastal defensive scheme; it is one of the four he constructed in Kent. This building was augmented in 1806 during the threat of a Napoleonic invasion.
