Thank goodness for signposts, as they were (and still are) a necessity when travelling though these rural areas. Originally made of wood, later versions were metal, and visually the black lettering certainly stands out from the white-painted pointing board. Note that no distances are indicated to either Dane Hill or Horsted Keynes - perhaps it was felt that it was not that important! No doubt the local postman would know, as there would probably be a daily collection even from this rather isolated spot.
