Seaton Carew

I lived in Seaton Carew from about 1944 to 1947. My parents ran a boarding house at 4 The Cliffe, (my sister was born there) adjacent to the Staincliffe, which as I recall (I was a 4 year old) was occupied by RAF personnel. I recall the bad winter of 1946, and the tremendous amount of snowfall. My first schooldays (kindergarten?)... [more]

Swimming at Seaton Carew Baths 1971

When I was eleven years old I went to Galleys Field School in Hartlepool and I have memories of going to the baths with the school. I was Ruth Thompson then.
The baths were salty and usually cold as they were fed by the sea. There were changing rooms at both ends of the baths and I remember going there one... [more]

Cleveland memories

War Memorial

This war memorial is in what we called Old Hartlepool, near the sea by the Hartlepool Docks/Headland. The war memorial for West Hartlepool was called the Cenotaph and was in Victoria Road, West Hartlepool.

Greenside in the 1940s

My memories are of Greatham mainly in the 1940s. My nan and grandad , Gertrude and Joseph Peacock Wilkinson, lived in the large house called Greenside opposite the Green, and now there are many houses there. My mum Joan was born in Greatham and lived there till she left to marry Walter Bowbanks from Stockton. I had many relations at Greatham,... [more]

My early childhood

Most of the photos here are from 1955. I was a five year old boy living in Greatham in 1955 with my dad, who was the local 'Bobby', my mam and my younger brother.  We lived at 3 Egerton Terrace which was a terraced house with an outside loo and we had a bath in a tub in the kitchen. Cerebos... [more]

My great-grandmother Mary Robson of Hartlepool

My great-grandma Mary Robson I think lived at 40 Hermit Street with her father William, (mother - Frances- deceased), a brother called William H Robson. Mary Robson had an illegitimate child called Frances, the child was born to a member of the well-to-do Field family. Before Hermit Street they lived at Temperance Street. If anyone has any info for me, being... [more]

My grandparents were from West Hartlepool...

I live in Alberta, Canada now, but my grandparents were Edith Readman who married Ernest Rowlands in 1912. If anyone has any information about them from when they lived there or their families.. please let me know.
Thanks

W. Hartlepool WW1

My father, Maurice Arthur (1902-1982), was the son of the GP, W. B. Arthur, in Wingate. He kept a daily diary from 1917 to 1982. There are many entries regarding Hartlepool, WW1 and the Durham Minefields. However, in 1918 he states (040218) "Hartlepool Tank gets £803,421". Then on 090218 he states, "Tank No 130, total to 4 pm. £2,200,000". And there... [more]

County Durham Photographic Memories

The Green was, and still is, one of the more picturesque parts of Seaton Carew; the houses were mostly built in the early 19th century. In the corner, with the steep bargeboarded gables, stands Sylvern House, dating from 1864.

Cleveland Living Memories

Children are having a jolly time in the old baths, which were situated on the sea front near the Staincliffe Hotel. The baths were donated in 1914 by Sir William Gray, the famous local shipbuilder who had also founded the South Durham Steel and Iron Company in 1898. It is notable that the baths operated with salt water. They were demolished... [more]

Cleveland Living Memories

Very much an architectural relic of a former age, including its clock tower, the bus station looks very similar today, except that the high-level balcony on the left has gone. Beyond the building to the right is the John Collins Pleasure Beach. The big dipper (right) was dismantled in the 1970s - a big wheel had suffered a similar fate at... [more]
