Childhood Memories

A Memory of Selby.

I have now settled in the south of Lincolnshire, I've lived here for 45 years, but I still consider it to be my home town. I visit my Aunty Betty whose lived there all her life, I've listened to the stories my father tells me of his childhood days of cycling to Drax grammar school, which I believe was quite some distance. My mum told me about the time she was in a caravan parked near to the Scott Mills (not the DJ) just after my sister was born in 1954. She was sat there watching the flood water from the river creeping ever towards the caravan when one of the workers came and between them they pushed the caravan to higher ground in wide street. Shortly after they moved to a council house in Eden Avenue. I don't know what became of the caravan, but it was the way my mum said. ,with a smile. , it was there untouched till it was sold.
At the weekend we received a copy of Swanning around Selby, nicely done, but so many omissions from past histories, the dye works. .scotts mills, mooney and moorley, the Danish bacon.,all major employers of their time but all seem to have been forgotten.
