Born in Sellindge

I was born in Sellindge in 1947, at 1 Railway Cottages. There were 3 cottages, my aunt lived in no. 2, and Mrs Clark in no. 3. My dad was born in Sellindge, married and started married life in no. 1, and lived there until his death in 1961.

I remember Mum sending me 'up the shop' for a bag of sugar or 'half a pound of marge'. Sometimes it would be a Sunday when the shop was closed or Wednesday afternoon, and Mum would say 'Go round the side door and ask Mrs Batchelor if she could let me have a bag of sugar till Friday when Dad gets paid'.

One day my dog had puppies, and when they were old enough, Dad said I had to get homes for them. He'd made me a 'truck' out of an old wooden box and wheels and I pulled it along with string. So I put the puppies in the 'truck' and took them up to the shop and tried to sell them outside,  needless to say I didn't try very hard ...

RE: RE: Born in Sellindge

Hi, I have worked in Sellindge for the last six years. I am always curious about what it was like before the rail link came through. I have heard that there was another pub (the Mucky Duck) and some cottages that were knocked down to make way for the link, I have tried to find a picture of this pub and cannot find a thing. I was just wondering if anyone else has a pic or knows where I could find one ...or can anyone remember which brewery the pub was with so I could research from this. The other half thinks I'm a bit strange to try and get this but I thought I would be easy to find a pic...but it seems like it's just vanished into thin air ...so before he thinks I've totally lost it ...please help.

RE: RE: Born in Sellindge

The Mucky Duck was originally called The Swan - the other was its nickname. It changed its name to the Mucky Duck when it became a freehouse towards the end of its life. The original brewery I think, was Whitbread, but it might have been Fremlins.
