Selsdon Primary School 1965 1970

A Memory of Selsdon.

I went to selsdon primary school from the age of 5. I had a twin brother Christopher we were in the same class all through school - there were two classes to each year. Miss Bjork was Headmistress and yes she was quite scary. In the final year I had Mr Worth who loved music but who also gave my brother the slipper - yes that was the punishment for naughty pupils!! I also remember Mr Younghusband who I liked very much and Mr Ivett who taught in the outside buildings he was such a lovely teacher but we did get away with a lot. The field was huge and backed on to the little health woods and the summers were fabulous playing on the field and also having the annual sports day there. My best friend was Julia Duffy other names I remember in my class Sarah tremaine, Lynda Robinson Andrew Hillburn. My dad still lives in Greville Avenue so I often return to Selsdon from Reigate where I now live. I also remember the United dairies on the corner of Farley Road and their yummy cream cakes. And getting my school uniform from Buckinghams on he high pavement with the post office below. The rec was a favourite place to go and the bird sanctuary. It was so nice to have grown up in an era when going out to play on your bikes or making camps was so easy and normal. Lots of good memories. I left selsdon primary and then went to the brand new Monks Hill High School which unfortunately is now under another name. But that's a whole new chapter.

My Auntie, although not blood relative, lived in the house at the top of Ingham Road. Her back garden overlooked the playing field hill of Selsdon Primary.I attended the school probably around the same time as you.My Mum was one of the cleaners there for many years.I would go help wash the dolls in the little ones classrooms when the Summer break was on.
I attended the school after moving to Selsdon from East London at the age of five. Still by far some of the happiest, most carefree days of my life.

Yes, I also remember Mr Ivert(sp?) and Messrs Younghusband and Worth. I can also add to that the lovely Miss Grout and Mrs Busby, whose son Andrew was in my class.

Further memories include Mrs Carr, who visited Australia and later showed us some home movies of her trip. I remember too running races around the entire playground, the excruciating school discos in the hall (Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep!) and, of course, the lingering stench of smoke after the canteen burnt down. Such drama....

Those long, languid playtimes spent lounging in the sunshine on the playing field seemed to last forever. Also remember the mini playground behind the greenhouse where I played my first game of football - sparking a life-long passion for Crystal Palace. And scoring my first goal in a match on the school pitch, only to be shushed by Mr Ivert because there were exams being held in the hall!

Lovely school, and so far removed from the rigours of real life - which I discovered almost instantly on transferring to my secondary environment at Riddlesdown.

A 59-year-old dad of two these days. Still pass the school regularly (when not in lockdown) and the sight of it never fails to spark a pleasant memory or three.

Nice to read others' memories. Please keep them coming.

I was at Selsdon Primary between 62 and 67 when I left for John Newnham a mile away.
In those days we got given small glass bottles of milk at morning break and in the infamous winter of 62/63 it was totally frozen which when you’re 6 is somewhat exciting.
Kids in my class included Paul Whitford (who was sort of my best mate), Graham Dobney, Richard Burchell, Linda Gregory, and Penny Campbell.
I certainly remember Mr Worth (who called you a cabbage if you said something incorrect) Mr Younghusband, and Mr Ivett. Miss Bjork too but I did my best not to catch her attention too often!
I remember well the field, the old canteen, the court, and little pond by the entrance.
I still drive pass there from time to time and it looks much as it ever did at a quick glance.
