South Benfleet Memories Of Summer Holidays

A Memory of South Benfleet.

The photo of Station Hill reminds me of many happy days spent at my aunts house further down the hill ,she lodged in a lovely house with a balcony across the front owned by a couple Em and Bert who owned an enormous brown and white dog called Sport.I went to Benfleet from 1944 to the early sixties mostly for the summer holidays and freedom to wander were ever I wanted to.Trips by bus to Canvey took place and walks along the creeks looking at boats many with people living on them.We sometimes went to Southend by bus from a stop across the field at the rear of the house now its a car park,I liked Southend for the pier and the Kersal also a regular trip I did was to Liegh On Sea for the cockles and other sea food bought at the cockle sheds by the railway .I enjoyed my days at Benfleet and my aunt married Arthur Carley and they moved to a bungerlow on the edge of the village looking towards Pitsea. You could walk to the station from here across the fields ,and I walked their dog here ,eventualy they moved to Deal in Kent.Benfleet had great charm then I always looked forward to my visits and exploring the area I have vague memories of the shop and I must have used it.
