Does Anyone Have Any Information About St Joseph's Rc Poor Law School For Girls Which Existed In Southall Between 1918 1930 Ish.

A Memory of Southall.

Hello I'm trying to find out the name of the convent that my Mother grew up in in Southall. She was left there as an orphan as a 2 or 3 year old in 1915 and lived there being looked after by nuns until she was 14. Does anyone know the name of the convent. I think it was a school as well as an orphanage. Thank you - Derek White. Her name was Elsie Elizabeth Fountain.

We have now found out (from the 1921 census) that the school where Derek's mother was left and lived at until she was 14 was St Joseph's Roman Catholic Poor Law School for Girls, South Road, Southall, Middlesex. It was run by nuns from the Order of the Holy Cross. Most of the girls lived there and many were orphans. It was housed in a building previously used as a children's home and later as a hospital for Australian soldiers during. WW1. We now think she must have been left there around 1918 soon after it opened. It closed around 10 years later and the building was demolished before WW2 we believe. If anyone has any memories or information about this short lived school we would be very grateful. thank you.

I found out that St Joseph's was situated in Brooke Green until 1920, then was sold and the children transferred to Southall, keeping the name of St Joseph's. they remained there for ten years, then moved to Totteridge.
