Hodgson/Braithwaite Family

I do not have a memory exactly but have found out that my Grandma Braithwaite was born in Spark Bridge and a lot of her family of Hodgsons also lived there.  Her father James Braithwaite was a blacksmith and a lot of the family of Hodgsons worked in the Bobbin Mill that used to be there.  I just wish I could work out where they lived.  On the census forms it states Spark Bridge with no road.  I just wonder if they were further up the hill just past the Royal Oak as they seem to be old houses?  I just wonder if anyone out there could tell me?

RE: RE: Hodgson/Braithwaite Family

My mother grew up in Spark Bridge and remembers a Hodgson family being there (she thinks Hodgsons still live in Spark Bridge), but thinks that the husband came from Swarthmoor (near to Ulverston) and the wife came from Liverpool. Apparently many of the older houses in Spark Bridge were knocked down, including some near to the mill. Some were replaced with the council houses that are there now. Maybe somebody still living in the village could help.

RE: RE: Hodgson/Braithwaite Family

I too grew up in Spark Bridge because I am the grandson of Thomas and Francis Hodgson, the people who the last gentleman was mentioning. They are both in their eighties and still live in the village of Spark Bridge. Their first house was just past the mill situated on the river bank but was demolished a long time ago.

Richard, I remember your grandparents Fran and Tommy very well. I used to work at the bobbinmill between school and college times in the 60's and early 70's

The row is a line of mill houses that still exist today. But if you look in the pub there are some aerial maps of what the villlage looked like when the two mills were running.

RE: RE: Hodgson/Braithwaite Family

Several of the Hodgson family were in the Bobbin industry, Thomas Hodgson (Gt.Gt. Grandfather)was foreman at Gunsons Bobbin Mill in Ulpha in 1850, sadly his son John died there at that time. Five members of the Hodgson family with their spouses moved to a Bobbin mill in Chepstow, Gwent in 1866. A couple moved back to Westmoreland, any family links would be welcome.

RE: RE: Hodgson/Braithwaite Family

I am a descendant of the Hodgsons that were in the Aarod Foot, Ayside, Toppinraise and Colton area going back to at least the early 1700s. I am wondering if there is any connection to any of your Hodgsons?
