Stanmore 1950 52

A Memory of Stanmore.

Hallo , my name is Cliff Bowley. My family moved to Stanmore in 1950 to a very large house called "Belmont Lodge " on the corner of Denis Lane and London Road junction. Does anybody remember it? It was knocked down for development, (what a shame). It was not very visible to the road because it had very large trees and bushes surrounding it. The house was requisitioned by the council, and families like ours, displaced after the war, it was a place to live. At least 6 very large bedrooms and a below stairs apartment for the servants. It was just like the programme "upstairs, downstairs". The gardens were laid out for self sufficiency - fruit trees, vegetable patches, Damsons, russet apple tree, golden pear tree. On the other side of Denis Lane was a bomb site where my brother and friends played. But just near Denis Lane was a large Mulberry tree, it was as large as a large oak tree (over 100 years old at least). At the time we did not understand the significance of it. My brother and I had a fantastic time in Stanmore. At the time it was but a village, we went to the village school up Stanmore Hill.
Please if you know us (my brother`s name was Jim or Jimmy) get in touch. cliffbowley@sky.com

I still live in Stanmore and when we drive up Denis lane its like a whole different secluded world with trees blocking the view of the bustling broadway.
I was born in Stanmore in 1944 and my mother worked in the Chemist almost all her working life. In the 1950s I used to look after the Smith's bakers pony. George and Harry Smith ran the bakery that was located behind the shops in the Broadway. It was the place to go for wonderful bread and buns! I absolutely loved the village and I remember the large house on the corner of Denis Lane and London Road.
