More about this scene

Pleasure prevails, with the Riverside Café and an amusement arcade next to the river. The commodious launch Amo is waiting to fill up with tourists for a river cruise. The Tontine, overlooking the canal basin, offers traditional draught beers and food, but in 1788 it was owned by the Canal Company; the houses on each side of the original inn were used by hop merchants - there was once a great trade in hops here before the Worcester Hop Market opened. When permission for a canal was refused at Bewdley, James Brindley brought it to Stourport, following the Stour Valley and joining the Severn at this point. Stourport, with its quay and warehouses, replaced Bewdley as an inland port, and although its commercial traffic has gone, it retains its colourful history. The canal bridges are scored and worn by the ropes of the horses that used to pull the narrow boats.
